The carry bag for this travel specially. I painted it all white.

03. NYC Underground Art Scene Guide NYCアンダーグラウンドアートシーンガイド

When all is said and done, NYC is the city of Art. I declare it. Like Metropolitan Museum, Guggenheim Museum,
Whitney Museum, or MOMA as the great museums to the great galleries in SOHO. It's surprising that such a huge collection
of the art in this city. But you can't forget.... as the same as the other cultures, there is the Underground Art Scene
in NYC!
When I got back to Japan from European trip, as I wanted to start painting seriously, I visited Design Festa Gallery in Harajuku, Japan, in order to find rental studios. And a girl who I met there showed me her portfolio telling me that she was a painter in New York. They were kind of fairy-tale-abstract style, and I still remember her strong touch of dynamic colors. In a few days before I left for NYC, I had sent E-mail to her that I was heading for the city, then she invited me for the gallery tour in Brooklyn with her friends.
Her name is Sonomi. She seems to be staying in this town for 10 years. Now she is living with her husband Vance together. I met up with that girl and headed for Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The neighborhood is famous for the new art scene from 5 or 6 years ago. As I've visited this area in the last time, it's good to know the hip happening in the city. After we joined to Rodney, friend of Sonomi, and got started the gallery tour!
What I noticed was that the art here is grotesque! I should say VIVID, maybe. Cute, Stupid, Stylish.... there were some types but I felt grotesque in each art. That might be because I like those kind, and also they were sensual. After all, I felt the sense of "Living" strongly.
After that, we went to a gallery that Sonomi's friend was working. That gallery had been a warehouse originally before, but artists made it up into the gallery, and besides, they made a room to live as to be confidential to the authorities. Such a gallery is the place to live art, not sell art! That's like this; In order to do what they want, and tried something, then they got that style!
This IS the NYC Underground Art Scene! From such an environment, such a "Living" art is created. I don't know about Tokyo if there is a kind of scene yet, but if there is, I would check it out, baby!
何と言ってもニューヨークはアートの街だ。そう決め付けてしまおう。メトロポリタンミュージアム、グッゲンハイム、ホィットニー、MOMAをはじめとする大きな美術館から、SOHOを中心とする大きなギャラリー。こんなに多くのアートがこの街に集まっているのは驚異的だ。でもね、それだけじゃないんだよ。ニューヨークには、他の文化と同じように、アンダーグラウンドアートの世界が広がっているんだ！
前回のヨーロッパの旅から帰ってきたころ、絵を真剣にやりたくなっていたので、僕は貸スタジオを探すため、原宿にある「Design Festa」ギャラリーを訪ねてみた。そこで、たまたま知り合った女性が、ニューヨークでペインティングをしてるといっていくつかのポートフォリオを見せてくれた。メルヘンなアブストラクトフリースタイル、といった感じの作品で、今でも大胆な色使いが印象に残っている。ニューヨークに発つ数日前に、僕がニューヨークに訪れる事をその女性に連絡したら、彼女の友人らと一緒にBrooklynのギャラリーをまわらないかとお誘いをいただいた！
彼女の名前は園実さん。ニューヨークに住みはじめて10年くらいとのこと。現在はアメリカ人のだんなさんVanceとともに暮らしている。その彼女とユニオンスクエアで待ち合わせ、BrooklynのWilliamsburgに向かった。そこは、新たなアートシーンとして5〜6年前くらいから注目されはじめたエリアだ。僕も前回のステイの時に訪れた事があったが、最近の傾向をチェックするにはもってこいの場所だ。僕らは現地で、園実さんの友人Rodneyと合流し、ギャラリーツアーをスタートした。
数件まわってて気付いたのは、こっちのアートはグロテスク！だって事。生々しい、って言う表現がぴったりかな？キュート、バカ、スタイリッシュなどいろいろなタイプの作品があるんだけど、どれもグロぃ感じが残る。単純に僕がグロイのが好きなだけかもしれないけれど、そんな作品は官能的でもある。つまりは、「生きている」ということを強烈に感じるわけだ。
その後、園実さんの友人が働いているギャラリーに行ってみた。そこは、元々倉庫だったが、アーティストが自分たちでギャラリーに作り上げ、なんとそれに加えて、当局に内緒で住処まで作ってそこに住んでいるという。そういったギャラリーは、もはやアートを売るための場所ではなく、文字通りアートを生きる場所となっている！好きな事をやるために、何とかやってたら、こんなスタイルになった....という勢いだ。
これこそがNYCアンダーグラウンドアートシーンだ！こういう環境からあの「生きている」アートが生まれてくるんだなあ。こんな環境が東京にあるのかどうかは、まだ知らないが、もしあったら絶対チェックしてみたい。

04. Traveling to Native American Reservation is not easy, man. ネイティブアメリカン居留地への旅は簡単じゃないぜ、ほんと。

Before I come to this traveling in USA, I declared as "Because I was moved by the philosophy of the leaders of Native
American People called Iroquois, I'm gonna meet them!" and left Japan, however, I really worried in my heart about my
travel. You know why? Because I didn't know where is the city I searched in the Internet, even if I get some contacts
addresses. And because I couldn't imagine what kind of place the "Native American Reservation" is. "Damn it, I'll search
it when I get to USA!" .... that's how I came to NYC.
"The coolest neighborhood in the world New Yorkers must know about the traveling to Native American Reservations off course...", I had a hope with too much expectations, and I asked my friend Randall, new friend Sonomi and her husband Vance. They all said.... "I don't know" It's no wonder! No one can direct to where he has never been. But they taught me one great thing. "You should go to National Museum of American Indians in downtown." ......THAT IS RIGHT!!
Next next day, as I was praying, "I have to get some information here!", and opened the gate of the museum. Having found that there was a library in the museum, I told my purpose to a staff, then he brought me into the back. There was a fat lady with glasses. When I explained my purpose, she suddenly started talking on and on about visiting Native American Reservations, and put some books on the table. Well, fine! I've got a lot!
Besides, she kept talking about POWWOW. Powwow is the festival of Native American and some are widely opened to public people. She said it's beginning of the season, and showed me the Powwow calendar. I gazed at the calendar, and found 2 events are possible to visit on my road. One is in NYC and one is in near Santa Fe.
Furthermore, in the next day I summed 10 address or details of the Reservations which I couldn't research last day, and I seemed to get enough information. The only thing I have to do is to call those Reservations like Onondaga, which is one of the Iroquois Nations.
Traveling this time seems to be more difficult. But I'm sure the traveling would be more fun if I have no way before me.... I'm really pumped up for it. 旅に出る前に、「イロコイ連邦というネイティブアメリカンのリーダーがもつ思想に感銘を受けたから、彼らに会ってくる！」なんて簡単に言って、日本を旅立ったものの、僕は内心不安でいっぱいいっぱいだった。だって、インターネットでいろいろ調べてると、一応連絡先の住所は手に入るものの、ニューヨーク以外のアメリカ合衆国のことを知らない僕には、それがどこにあるのかも分からない。さらに「居留地」というエリアの存在そのものが想像できない。えーい、仕方ないからアメリカに来てから探してみよう、というわけで、まずニューヨークに来ちゃったわけだ。
世界一クールなニューヨーカー達だったら、もちろんネイティブアメリカンへの旅の事くらい知ってるだろう‥‥なんて、やや過信した願望を抱いて、僕の友達Randallや、新たに知り合った園実さん、そして彼女のだんなさんVanceに聞いてみたところ‥‥。「わからない。」とみな首をそろえて答えていた。よく考えたら当然だ。行った事がないところへの道しるべなんか出来るわけがない。しかし、彼らは素晴らしい事を教えてくれた。「ダウンタウンにネイティブアメリカン美術館があるからそこに行ってみなよ。」‥‥それだ！！
翌々日、「ここでなんとか情報を手に入れなければ！」と、すがるような思いで、僕はその美術館の門をくぐった。美術館内に図書館があるのを見つけ、そこのスタッフに僕の目的を告げると、彼は僕を奥へと案内してくれた。そこにいたのは、太っちょの眼鏡おばさん。同じように僕の目的を彼女に伝えると、彼女は突然、ネイティブアメリカン居留地を訪ねる事に関して早口でまくし立て、何冊かの本をドン！と僕のテーブルに置いた。オッケー、でてきたでてきた！
さらに彼女は、POWWOWについて語りだす。POWWOWとはネイティブアメリカン民族のお祭りで一般に公開されているものも多いという。シーズンも始まった頃だからそれを訪ねてみるのが良いと彼女はPOWWOWカレンダーを差し出した。僕はそのカレンダーをにらみつけ、2件のイベントが僕のルート上にあることが分かった！一つはNYC。もう一つはSanta Feの近くだ。
さらに翌日、調べきれなかった居留地の住所や概要を10件程度まとめ、何とか必要程度の情報は手に入れたようだ。あとは、イロコイ連邦の一つであるオノンダーガ居留地など、片っ端から電話して聞いてみるしかないらしい。
今回の旅はどうやら、いつにもまして困難なようだ。しかし旅は決まった道がない方が、がんばりがいがあるってもんさ！と僕は勝手に一人で燃え上がっている！

05. Picasso and Matisse ピカソとマティス

I believe Picasso is a magnificent guy. In fact, it's only one third of his works that I think wonderful. But
I think his life itself is magnificent. That's because he communicated with people, love girls, and art with strong passion.
He is so attractive by a distinguished brain and actions more than the skill of paintings, and his charming personality
is crowd-pulling. Even now after his death, he keeps attracting people. And now in New York City, Picasso and his great
rival Matisse is pulling huge number of people.
It's MOMA QNS. In this museum, Picasso and Matisse show is on. They have limited number of people to enter, and all advanced tickets are sold out. The only thing I can do to enter is to be a friend of MOMA staff or to be in the line to buy a same-day ticket. JOJO, who is introduced by my friend KAN in Tokyo, was ex-MOMA worker, but when I and JOJO visited MOMA, it was open for only blind people (I don't know how they can SEE though), I had to be in the line next morning.
Usually I wake up late but I was so concentrated the next day. Getting on the rush-hour subway to MOMA, I found out there was a long line already. It was 9:15. It might be bit late. But a line keeper staff said it could be ok. Just like this, we were waiting for tickets pulled by Picasso's power.
As we were waiting for 2 hours, the ticket counter got to be really closer. When I almost reached there, a staff screamed, "No more ticket for today! Please come tomorrow!" Oh my god! I complained for wasting 2 hours with people around me.
I was visiting, however, from Japan for long long distance. I couldn't give it up. I was starting writing the message "Extra MOMA ticket for me?" on my sketchbook, and stand on the corner by MOMA. Thought some MOMA staff looked and laughed at me, or other guys who were looking for extra ticket cheered me, I was waiting for the ticket. I was just waiting for it.
Less than one hour passed.... a lady came to me. Saying, "Actually I have one." I couldn't believe it, and said "Are you serious?" But it was true! I was so happy! I got a ticket! I paid 5 bucks for her to give thanks (ticket is 20 bucks in ticket counter), and I really enjoyed the show.
An action creates a road for ahead. It's my philosophy of life. And I think Picasso's pulling made me act like that. Thanks a lot.
ピカソはとんでもないヤツだと僕は思ってる。実は、彼の星の数ほどある作品の中で本当にすごいと思えるのは3分の1くらいしかない。しかし僕は彼の生き方そのものがすごいと思う。なぜなら、彼はいつも情熱的に人と交わり、恋をし、そしてアートしていたからだ。ずば抜けた頭脳と行動力が絵画の技術それよりも魅力的な人間で、愛嬌のある人柄は常に人をひきつける力を持っている。そして、死んでもなお多くの人々を魅了しつづけているのだ。そしてここニューヨークに、ピカソとそのライバルだったマティスによって本当にたくさんの人々が引き寄せられている。
MOMA QNS(クイーンズ)。この美術館でピカソとマティス展が行われている。毎日の入場制限が限られていて、前売りチケットはすべて売り切れの状態。残された方法は、美術館職員に知り合うか、朝早くから列を作って並ぶしかない。東京の友人カンに紹介されたJOJOは何と元MOMAの職員だったが、彼とともにMOMAに訪れた日は、盲目者のためだけに公開されている日だったため（絵はあんまり見れないだろうが）、仕方なく次の日朝早くから並ぶ事になった。
いつもゆっくり起きている僕はこの日ばかりは気合が入っていた。朝の通勤ラッシュの地下鉄でMOMAまでたどり着くと、既に長い列が出来ていた。朝9時15分。ちょっと出遅れたかもしれない。しかし望みはあると、列を整理している職員も言う。こうして僕らはまたピカソに引き寄せられてクイーンズでチケットを待った。
2時間ほど並ぶとだんだんチケット売り場が近づいてきた。ようやくと思われたそのとき、「今日のチケットはもうありません！明日また来てください！」とスタッフが叫んだ！なんてこった！？周りの人たちも動揺し、せっかく2時間も並んでるのに、と文句をとばしあった。
しかし僕はわざわざ日本から来てるので、ここであきらめるわけには行かない。持っていたスケッチブックに「僕に余りのチケットはない？」というメッセージを書いて、近くの路地に立つことにした。MOMAの職員もそれをみて、冷やかしたり、同じようにチケットを探している人がハッパをかけてくれたりしながらも僕はしぶとく待った。待ちつづけた。
1時間もたたない頃、一人の女性が僕のほうへと寄ってきた。「ちょっと、チケット持ってるよ。」と言うのだ。「マジで？」と最初は疑ってしまったが、本当にうれしかった！まさかとは思っていたが、本当にチケットが手に入ったのだ！僕はお礼に5ドル払い（通常は20ドル）、ピカソとマティス展を存分に楽しんだのだ。
行動があって初めて道が開ける。僕の人生の哲学だ。そして思うに、ピカソの吸引力が僕をそうさせてくれた。サンキュー！
It's MOMA QNS. In this museum, Picasso and Matisse show is on. They have limited number of people to enter, and all advanced tickets are sold out. The only thing I can do to enter is to be a friend of MOMA staff or to be in the line to buy a same-day ticket. JOJO, who is introduced by my friend KAN in Tokyo, was ex-MOMA worker, but when I and JOJO visited MOMA, it was open for only blind people (I don't know how they can SEE though), I had to be in the line next morning.
Usually I wake up late but I was so concentrated the next day. Getting on the rush-hour subway to MOMA, I found out there was a long line already. It was 9:15. It might be bit late. But a line keeper staff said it could be ok. Just like this, we were waiting for tickets pulled by Picasso's power.
As we were waiting for 2 hours, the ticket counter got to be really closer. When I almost reached there, a staff screamed, "No more ticket for today! Please come tomorrow!" Oh my god! I complained for wasting 2 hours with people around me.
I was visiting, however, from Japan for long long distance. I couldn't give it up. I was starting writing the message "Extra MOMA ticket for me?" on my sketchbook, and stand on the corner by MOMA. Thought some MOMA staff looked and laughed at me, or other guys who were looking for extra ticket cheered me, I was waiting for the ticket. I was just waiting for it.
Less than one hour passed.... a lady came to me. Saying, "Actually I have one." I couldn't believe it, and said "Are you serious?" But it was true! I was so happy! I got a ticket! I paid 5 bucks for her to give thanks (ticket is 20 bucks in ticket counter), and I really enjoyed the show.
An action creates a road for ahead. It's my philosophy of life. And I think Picasso's pulling made me act like that. Thanks a lot.
ピカソはとんでもないヤツだと僕は思ってる。実は、彼の星の数ほどある作品の中で本当にすごいと思えるのは3分の1くらいしかない。しかし僕は彼の生き方そのものがすごいと思う。なぜなら、彼はいつも情熱的に人と交わり、恋をし、そしてアートしていたからだ。ずば抜けた頭脳と行動力が絵画の技術それよりも魅力的な人間で、愛嬌のある人柄は常に人をひきつける力を持っている。そして、死んでもなお多くの人々を魅了しつづけているのだ。そしてここニューヨークに、ピカソとそのライバルだったマティスによって本当にたくさんの人々が引き寄せられている。
